Lost Your Data? Here's How to Restore

You can create encrypted backups to iCloud Drive from Settings > Data Recovery > Manage Backups. Backups are optional and user-initiated. If you've created a backup, you can restore your pets, health records, and Pet Ledger.

Quick Restore Steps:

  1. Make sure iCloud is enabled on your device and you are signed into the same Apple ID you used before
  2. Open the app and go to Settings > Data Recovery
  3. Tap Restore from Backup and confirm when prompted
  4. Done! Your wallet and data will be restored.

Backup not found? Wait a few minutes for iCloud to sync, then try again. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used when creating the backup.

Never created a backup? Unfortunately, data cannot be recovered without a backup. Go to Settings > Data Recovery > Manage Backups to create one now for the future.

How do I add my pet?

Tap the "+" button on the Pets tab, fill in your pet's information, and add a photo. Your pet's profile will be saved locally on your device.

How do I add health records?

Go to your pet's profile, tap "Health Records", then tap the "+" button. You can add vaccinations, medications, vet visits, and more.

What is a Digital Record?

A Digital Record is a Secure digital record designed to document your pet's record history and ownership linkage. Create one using GEN credits — it becomes a long-lasting, secure record that can be independently verified. Contact us for pricing options.

Do I need any technical knowledge to use the app?

No! The app handles all technical complexity for you. When you create a Digital Record, you use GEN credits, and we handle the rest. Your Pet Ledger is automatically created and managed.

Is my data stored in the cloud?

No. Nebula Genesis Pet Ledger uses a local-first architecture. All your pet data, health records, and photos are stored locally on your device. Only digital record data is stored long-term on public infrastructure.

How do I back up my data?

On iOS, backups use iCloud automatically — no sign-in, no password needed:

  1. Go to Settings > Data Recovery > Manage Backups
  2. Tap Create Backup Now
  3. The app stores your wallet recovery words in iCloud under your Apple ID

Optional — back up photos and pet records too: on the same screen you'll see a Back up photos and records to iCloud toggle. This is off by default. When turned on, the next Create Backup Now also uploads your pet records and photos to your iCloud Drive under your Apple ID, so they can be restored on a new device. Only enable this if you're comfortable with your photos being stored in iCloud Drive (they stay under your Apple ID — they are not sent to our servers).

We also recommend writing down your 12 recovery words from Settings > View Recovery Words and keeping them somewhere safe. You can use them to restore on any device, even if iCloud is unavailable.

Can I use the app offline?

Yes! The app works completely offline. You only need internet connectivity for creating digital records, cloud backup, and syncing features.

How do I scan vaccination records?

Use the OCR scanning feature in Health Records. Tap "Scan Document", take a photo of your pet's vaccination record, and the app will extract the information automatically.

What if I lose my device or my data disappears?

If you created a backup before, you can restore your wallet on any device with the same Apple ID:

  1. Install the app on your new device and sign in with the same Apple ID
  2. Wait a few minutes for iCloud to sync
  3. Go to Settings > Data Recovery > Restore from Backup and confirm when prompted
  4. Your wallet will be restored. If you had enabled Back up photos and records to iCloud on your old device, your pet records and photos will also download and restore. If that option was off, pet records and photos that only lived on the old device are not recoverable from the cloud backup — you can re-import them if you have them written down or exported

No backup and no written recovery words? Your wallet cannot be recovered. The app uses local-first storage — your pet data stays on your device and is not copied to our servers. See our Privacy Policy for what limited data we process.

How do I restore my data?

There are two ways:

Automatic (new device): if your database is empty and a backup exists on the same Apple ID, the app will prompt you to restore when you open it.

Manual:

  1. Go to Settings > Data Recovery > Restore from Backup (or Settings > Advanced Settings > Restore from Backup)
  2. Confirm when prompted — no password needed
  3. Wait for the restore to complete

Tip: make sure iCloud is enabled and you are signed in with the same Apple ID you used before.

What happens if I lose access to my Apple ID?

The iCloud backup relies on your Apple ID. If you lose access to your Apple ID and did not write down your 12 recovery words, your wallet cannot be restored.

  • We never store or have access to your recovery words
  • Your best protection is to write the 12 recovery words from Settings > View Recovery Words down somewhere safe
  • If your Apple ID is compromised, anyone with access to it could also restore your wallet — enable two-factor authentication on your Apple ID

How do I share my pet's health records?

You can export health records as PDFs or share them directly from the app. Digital Record holders can also share a QR code that links to their pet's public digital record.

Security Warning: Protect Yourself from Scams

Nebula Genesis will NEVER:

  • Ask for your 12 recovery words or any wallet secret
  • Send you unsolicited direct messages (DMs) first
  • Ask you to send money or funds to "verify" your account
  • Contact you via social media to offer "support"
  • Ask for your password or login credentials
